How Google Continues to Power Carbon-Free Energy in Arizona

Following the launch of its first Arizona data center in Mesa, Google has announced an energy supply agreement with Salt River Project (SRP).

The tech giant aims to support more than 430 megawatts of new carbon-free energy capacity across the state. This is designed, according to Google’s projections, to help operations in Arizona reach at least 80% carbon-free energy on an hourly basis by 2026. Read more >>

Waymo to debut autonomous food delivery in Phoenix

Waymo and Uber announced April 3 a new partnership that will launch in Phoenix and will have driverless cars delivering food to Uber Eats customers.

Waymo, a subsidiary of Google owner Alphabet Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOGL), said in a blog post that it has expanded its partnership with Uber (NYSE: UBER) to include its food delivery service Uber Eats. Read more >>

Phoenix, SRP install electric vehicle chargers at 6 libraries

Six Phoenix libraries have electric vehicle charging stations, a step toward the city’s goal of 500 EV stations by 2030.

The city initiative with support from Tempe-based Salt River Project began last year, and each charging station offers two charging ports, according to a release. Read more >>


Phoenix Passes Historic Ordinance Giving Outdoor Workers Protection From Extreme Heat

A historic new law in Phoenix, Arizona, will provide thousands of outdoor workers in the hottest city in the country with protections from extreme heat.

In a unanimous vote, the Phoenix City Council passed an ordinance requiring that workers have easy access to rest, potable water and shade, as well as training to recognize signs of heat stress, a press release from the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health (National COSH) said. Vehicles with enclosed cabs must also have access to air conditioning. Read more >>

The University of Arizona Center for Innovation (UACI) which serves as the science and technology startup incubator network of Tech Parks Arizona, is pleased to announce that three current UACI startups and one alum obtained four of six available opportunities statewide to participate in the exclusive Flinn Foundation Bioscience Entrepreneurship Program. City of Chandler receives federal grant to increase tree canopy

The city of Chandler will be planting more trees to combat the problem of extreme heat. The Chandler City Council approved the grant agreement during their meeting on March 21.

The grant agreement comes after the city submitted a proposal and received a $767,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service in June 2023. No match is required for the grant. Read more >>


Biden-Harris administration invests $2.3 billion in projects to expand affordable, reliable, clean power in rural communities

As part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack recently announced at the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s PowerXchange annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas that USDA is moving forward on clean energy investments in 23 states to reduce pollution and strengthen rural America’s power grid. TSMC Arizona and U.S. Department of Commerce Announce up to US$6.6 Billion in Proposed CHIPS Act Direct Funding, the Company Plans Third Leading-Edge Fab in Phoenix

TSMC (TWSE: 2330, NYSE: TSM) today announced that the U.S. Department of Commerce and TSMC Arizona have signed a non-binding preliminary memorandum of terms (PMT) for up to US$6.6 billion in direct funding under the CHIPS and Science Act. TSMC also announced plans to build a third fab at TSMC Arizona to meet strong customer demand leveraging the most advanced semiconductor process technology in the United States. Read more >>


Amazon signs third major metro Phoenix lease in 2024

Retail giant Amazon has moved forward with its third major industrial deal in metro Phoenix this year.

Amazon.com Inc. has fully leased a 1.2 million-square-foot warehouse in Goodyear called Prologis 303 Business Park, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the deal.

The Seattle-based e-commerce company (Nasdaq: AMZN) this month signed on for a decade at the building, which is located at the southwest corner of Cotton Lane and Camelback Road just west of the Loop 303. Read more >>


Google data center’s next phase goes to Mesa for review

As Google continues to build out the first phase of its $1 billion data center campus in Mesa, the city’s design review board will hear a proposal for its second phase on April 9.

The second phase, which is referred to by the codename “Redhawk,” consists of a 280,000-square-foot building used as a data center as well as a mechanical yard, an electrical yard and a medium-voltage substation. Those plans are similar to Google’s first phase, which started construction last summer on a site of more than 185 acres near the northwest corner of Sossaman and Elliot roads. Read more >>

solar developer taps area near Phoenix for $1.2B project

A group of investors who own approximately 30,000 acres of land in the Harquahala Valley have inked a deal to build a $1.2 billion solar project on the site and are negotiating separate deals to sell the water underneath the project, which lies about 60 miles west of Phoenix.

Salt Lake City-based Copia Power, a developer of renewable energy platforms backed by global investment firm The Carlyle Group (Nasdaq: CG), plans to invest billions in the region in an effort to develop more than 1,500 megawatts of additional renewable energy projects, said Garret Bean, managing director of strategic development for Copia Power. Arizona Wins $156M Clean Energy Grant to Expand Access to Low-Cost Energy Options

Amazon drones could deliver packages in Arizona this year

An Arizona city has been picked as the first U.S. location to debut Amazon’s latest delivery drone technology.

The e-commerce giant’s new drone technology, called MK30, will deploy from Amazon’s same-day facility at 10601 W. Van Buren St. in Tolleson, which is located about 20 minutes west of downtown Phoenix.

Four cities in the Phoenix metro are the best places in the nation to quickly recoup the expenses of installing home solar panels, according to a new report.

Raytheon wins huge contract to build missiles for US Navy with shared guidance technology

Raytheon’s Tucson-based missile manufacturing operation has won a $344 million U.S. Navy contract to develop two military Standard Missile variants that will share guidance technology.

Under the modernization contract, the missiles — the SM-2 Block IIICU and the SM-6 Block IU — will be built to both use a newly designed guidance section, target detection device, independent flight termination system and electronics unit.
