According to a recent study, there will be a shortage of over 1 million STEM professionals and technicians by 2023. Unfortunately, this shortage is expected to continue in the next few years, as the number of retirements in the industry increases and the number of new graduates in the USA decreases.
This shortage will put a strain on companies in the United States and specifically in Arizona which are already challenged finding qualified candidates.
Making matters more challenging, the urgency to obtain STEM professionals is being increased by the arrival of new companies in the region. In 2023 and in the next five years, numerous new companies will be investing in Arizona, each of which will require a significant number of STEM professionals and technicians to operate effectively.
As an example of new companies investing in Arizona, there is a manufacturer of medical equipment which will be investing millions of dollars to establish a new facility in Phoenix, Arizona. This facility will require at least 200 STEM professionals and technicians to operate, so the company has already begun recruiting top talent from the area.
The State of Arizona is currently facing a shortage of over 20,000 STEM professionals and technicians. The number of STEM graduates in Arizona is not keeping up with the demand from employers.
Governments, private industry and educational institutions have been implementing many different excellent programs to support the industry to fill the gap of skilled talent in the United States, specifically in Arizona. However, the need for STEM talent is urgent.
There is an immediate and short-term solution to fulfill the shortage of skilled STEM professionals and technicians.
One of the solutions to find qualified and skilled STEM professionals and technicians in the immediate future is to bring them from Mexico. Mexico has a skilled, talented and qualified STEM workforce that can support the industry in Arizona. Mexico and the United States have a history of workers crossing the border to support the industry in both sides of the countries.
