Techbros Becomes the World’s First ITAD Company Certified to ISO/IEC 42001

Artificial intelligence is no longer an experiment running quietly in a lab. It routes our logistics, screens our data, and increasingly decides what happens to the technology we retire. As AI spreads into every sector, one question keeps surfacing in boardrooms and IT departments alike: who is checking the AI? 

For Techbros® Electronic Recycle & ITAD, the answer is now an independent auditor. The Scottsdale-headquartered company has been certified to ISO/IEC 42001, the first international standard for artificial intelligence management systems, published by the International Organization for Standardization in December 2023. Techbros® is the first company headquartered in Arizona to achieve the certification, and the first IT asset disposition (ITAD) company in the world to carry it. 

ISO/IEC 42001 does for AI what ISO 9001 did for quality and ISO 27001 did for information security. It requires an organization to formally govern how AI is developed, deployed, and monitored: documented risk assessments, human oversight, transparency about where AI is used, data governance, and continuous review of whether the systems behave as intended. Certification is not a one-time badge. It is an ongoing management system, audited by an accredited third party. 

“Every week we take in equipment from hospitals, banks, school districts, and utilities, and every one of those organizations is asking the same thing: how do we adopt AI without losing control of it,” said Sarkes Mkrdichian, CEO of Techbros®. “We decided the most credible answer was to hold ourselves to the standard first. If we are going to use AI to protect our clients’ data, our AI should be audited just as rigorously as our shredders and our wipe systems.” 

The certification matters for a reason that is easy to overlook: AI has a hardware afterlife. The same boom filling data centers with GPUs and accelerators is already producing the next wave of retired equipment, and that equipment leaves service carrying more than metal. Decommissioned AI servers can hold training data, credentials, cached inference logs, and in some cases the trained models themselves, which are valuable intellectual property. Understanding these systems, both how they work and what they retain, is becoming a core competency for anyone responsible for the end of the technology lifecycle.

Arizona is building a serious technology economy, and we wanted a company headquartered here to be first in the world in this category, not a coastal giant.” 

The new certification joins an integrated compliance stack that already includes R2v3, NAID AAA, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 27001, and ITAR registration, giving regulated organizations a single, fully audited chain of custody from pickup to final disposition, at no cost and with revenue shared back to the client. 

For Arizona Technology Council members, the takeaway is bigger than one company’s milestone. AI governance is arriving the way privacy and security compliance arrived a decade ago: first as a differentiator, then as an expectation, then as a requirement in contracts and RFPs. The organizations that understand these systems early, including what happens to them at end of life, will be the ones that adopt AI with confidence.
