Arizona Technology Council Southern Arizona Office honors regional leaders at 9th annual Tech + Business Expo

The Arizona Technology Council and the Arizona Commerce Authority proudly presented the 9th Annual Southern Arizona  Tech + Business Expo on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, at the Tucson Convention Center.  

More than 300 business and tech leaders in attendance learned what’s new and trending across Southern Arizona’s tech industries including transportation, automation, optics, biotech, mining, aerospace, defense, logistics, and robotics and celebrated excellence in technology and innovation in Southern Arizona.

These individuals and organizations were recognized by Karla Morales, Vice President, Southern Arizona Regional Office of the Arizona Technology Council, for their commitment to technology growth in Southern Arizona and their contributions to the Tech Council. 

Southern Arizona Innovator of the Year, sponsored by Quarles & Brady, was presented to Dr. Jim Schwiegerling of the Wyant College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona for significant contributions to the Southern Arizona technology community and advancing or transforming an industry sector.  Dr. Schwiegerling won back-to-back awards by also winning Innovator of the Year, Academia at the Tech Council’s statewide Governor’s Celebration of Innovation on October 13, 2021.

 

Southern Arizona Manufacturer of the Year, sponsored by The Data Strategy Lab,  was presented to Areté for demonstrating leadership as a manufacturer with a new process or product, and involvement with the business and wider community of Southern Arizona.

 

Southern Arizona Startup of the Year Award, sponsored by Rincon Research, was presented to Sylvan Source for achieving significant business success and technical innovation in the past year in Southern Arizona. Dr. Laura Demmons was unavailable for the event so Eric Smith from UA Center for Innovation accepted the award on her behalf.

 

The inaugural Southern Arizona Sustainability Award, sponsored by AGM Container Controls,  was presented to Leonardo Electronics US for its sustainable practices, initiatives, or programs by adopting practices without compromising people, the planet, or the economy. 

 

Southern Arizona Member Organization of the Year, sponsored by Rincon Research, was presented to AGM Container Controls for being Tech Council member that is a driving force to connect and empower the technology community in Southern Arizona.  AGM Container Controls’ CEO Howard Stewart also received the Transformational Leadership Award at the Tech Council’s statewide Governor’s Celebration of Innovation on October 13, 2021.

 

Members of the Tech Council in Southern Arizona submitted nominations in all five categories.  The awards are presented annually at the Southern Arizona Tech + Business Expo, the largest technology conference and exhibition in Southern Arizona.
