Panel discussion: Cybersecurity strategies to avoid scams during the pandemic and beyond

Many businesses, organizations and employees are currently adapting to an ever-changing economic outlook in the current business climate. With so much going on, cybersecurity may not top of mind. But it should be a top priority.

The Arizona Technology Council held a virtual panel discussion on cybersecurity featuring experts Anthony Dezilva and Frank Grimmelmann who shared their insight and expertise on how to keep your business running safely with a vast number of employees are working remotely.

As the foundation upon which so many digital services are delivered and how we connect and communicate, cybersecurity is of the utmost importance….now more than ever. Which is exactly why businesses should be vigilant in mitigating new cybersecurity threats that are emerging as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“COVID-19 has had an incredible impact on cybersecurity,” said Frank Grimmelmann. “There’s been a tremendous increase in cyber crimes, phishing scams and social engineering…not to mention fake vaccines and testing kits.”

“Vulnerabilities will remain, even as you protect yourself, your employees and your organization with firewalls and anti-virus software,” added Anthony Dezilva.

Attendees gained valuable insight into the tools, strategies and best practices to stay safe from cyber threats while adopting a more remote workforce, including:

  • Keep sofware current (Patch >> Patch >> Patch)
  • Use Antivirus and firewall
  • Use strong passwords and a password-management tool
  • Use two-factor/multi-factor authentication
  • Keep current on phishing scams
  • Protect sensitive personal identifiable info
  • Use mobile devices securely
  • Back up your data regularly
  • Don’t use public wi-fi without VPN
  • Review online accounts and credit reports regularly

So who is a target for cyber crime? “Everyone,” said Grimmelman. “Every employee needs to be cautious and recognize that.”

Moderated by Arizona Technology Council CEO Steve Zylstra, it was a fantastic discussion and well worth a listen.
