  • Mayo Clinic Phoenix leads Arizona hospitals for 13th consecutive year
  • Mayo Clinic ranked nationally in 10 medical specialties
  • Seven Arizona hospitals made U.S. News’ 504-hospital list

For the 13th year in a row, Mayo Clinic in Phoenix has been ranked as the leader among Arizona hospitals by U.S. News & World Report.

The magazine’s 2025-2026 Best Hospitals rankings, released Tuesday, put Mayo Clinic at the lead among a group of seven hospitals from Arizona to make the magazine’s 504-hospital list this year.

The others, in order of their in-state ranking, were Banner-University Medical Center Phoenix; HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Medial Center; Banner-University Medical Center Tucson; Banner Boswell Medical Center; TMC Healthcare-Tucson and Chandler Regional Medical Center.

Mayo Clinic was also was one of 20 hospitals nationally to be included in U.S. News’ Honor Roll — its ninth year on that list. The magazine said the Honor Roll includes those institutions with the highest overall rankings and the greatest number of “high performing” ratings across procedures and conditions. In all, 13 states were represented on that list this year.

In addition, Mayo Clinic was the only Arizona hospital to be ranked nationally in multiple medical specialties. Earning a ranking in a specialty means that the hospital is one of the nation’s top 50 in that area. Mayo Clinic Phoenix earned 10 of those; its highest ranking among those specialties was No. 14 in gastroenterology and GI surgery, which was a jump from No. 20 last year.

Dr. Richard Gray, the CEO of Mayo Clinic in Arizona, told the Business Journal that his institution’s consistent performance in these rankings serves as a testament to its longtime commitment to finding new and better ways to serve patients, and it reinforces to staff “that their hard work does not go unnoticed.”

And while such recognition is highly appreciated, Gray said he and his team balance that gratitude with a drive to do what hasn’t been done before in service of patients.

“We remain restless, saying that’s still not good enough,” he said. “We still need to find the next breakthrough.”

Mayo Clinic’s role is unique, Gray noted, in that the hospital focuses on patients with some of the most serious and rare cases. As such, he said, “we really try to be a complement not a competition to other providers in our area and our state.”

Beyond gastroenterology, Mayo Clinic’s specialty rankings were as follows:

  • No. 17: ear, nose & throat
  • No. 19: neurology & neurosurgery
  • No. 21: cancer
  • No. 21: geriatrics
  • No. 22: pulmonology & lung surgery
  • No. 27: diabetes & endocrinology
  • No. 36: orthopedics
  • No. 37: urology
  • No. 45: cardiology, heart & vascular surgery

Banner hospitals receive two specialty rankings

Besides Mayo Clinic, Banner-University Medical Center Phoenix and Banner-University Medical Center Tucson ranked Nos. 37 and 45, respectively, in the ear, nose & throat specialty. They were the only other Arizona hospitals to earn a specialty ranking.

The specialties are measured on factors including patient experience, patient survival, discharge outcomes, nurse staffing, advanced technology, patient services and reputation as determined by other medical experts.

While the specialties are ranked nationally, hospitals are ranked regionally, in keeping with U.S. News’ stated goal of helping patients choose the highest-quality care in their own communities.

“For most Americans, health care decisions are made close to home,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News, in a statement. “The Best Regional Hospitals rankings underscore the difference high-performing local medical centers make.”

In all, the hospitals on the U.S. News list cover 49 states and 95 metro areas.
