Latest Inc. 5000 list sees increase in Arizona companies ranked
Two Arizona companies are in the top 1% and another 14 are in the top 10% among the latest Inc. 5000 list of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies.
In all, a total of 156 Arizona companies appeared on the 2022 list, which compiles small businesses’ rates of growth over the past three years and ranks them accordingly. That’s 40 more companies than were on the 2021 list, making this the fourth-straight year that Arizona has seen an increase.
Leading the pack for the Grand Canyon State at No. 32 was Scottsdale-based Qwick, a “staffing-as-a-service” company that provides an on-demand labor marketplace for food and beverage businesses that posted 10,076% of growth since 2018.
Qwick said that it filled 332% more shifts in the first half of 2022 than in the same period in 2021. It said that in June of this year, it filled 400,000 shifts and fully vetted 110,000 professionals on its platform, launching in 10 new cities this year to reach a total of 25 U.S. markets.
“Today’s workforce is prioritizing autonomy and work-life balance, which the hospitality industry has historically not been conducive to,” said Retta Kekic, Qwick’s chief marketing officer, in a statement. “Our record growth shows that professionals value the flexibility of Qwick which allows them to choose when and where they work, giving them the freedom to earn income on their own terms, oftentimes to supplement other forms of work.”
Hot on Qwick’s heels was No. 37 Emerge, a Scottsdale transportation and logistics software firm that provides access to the latest market conditions so shippers and carriers can adapt in real time. That company saw growth of 8,953% over the past three years.
Emerge, which was founded in 2017, also has offices in Boulder, Colorado, and Atlanta, with more than 250 employees, according to its website. The company says more than 1,000 shippers are using its platform.
Median growth rate among top firms higher in 2022
Qwick and Emerge were Arizona’s only companies in the top 50, but more than a dozen were among the top 500. Each had growth exceeding 1,000%. Tempe-based Kayo Energy was ranked at No. 108 followed by Gilbert-based Cross Country Creative (No. 136), Sierra Vista-based Nemean Solutions (No. 158), Phoenix-based Zenernet (No. 162), Scottsdale-based Bad Birdie (No. 202), Tempe-based Pomchies (No. 229), Scottsdale-based Trainual (No. 255), Scottsdale-based 72SOLD (No. 260), Scottsdale-based 7th Level Communications (No. 391), Mesa-based Clutch Solutions (No. 414), Phoenix-based Paradigm Laboratories (No. 432), Phoenix-based HireRising (No. 454) and Yuma-based Renewable Power (No. 465).
The vast majority of Arizona companies were from the Valley, with five from the Tucson metro and one each from Flagstaff, Sierra Vista, Prescott, Lake Havasu City and Yuma.
Inc. described the past year as a time of blowout growth and significant change in the small business, reporting that among the top 500 on the 2022 list, the median growth rate was 2,144%, which was up from 1,820% on last year’s list.
The companies on this year’s list overcame challenges such as supply chain struggles, labor shortages and lingering effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, the magazine said.
Companies qualifying for the list had to have been founded and generating revenue by March 31, 2018, and are U.S.-based, privately held, for-profit and not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies. They also had to have a minimum revenue of $100,000 in 2018 and a minimum $2 million in 2021.
