Honeywell opens Phoenix facility for repairing military helicopter engines

Honeywell has opened a new facility near its Honeywell Aerospace headquarters in Phoenix dedicated to maintenance for the U.S. military T55 turboshaft helicopter engines.

The new Center for Excellence was established after Honeywell secured approval from the U.S. Army through a product verification audit. It brings together engineering, production, repair and overhaul work for the T55 engine to optimize operations.

By putting repair and overhaul work together in the same space as new engine production, Honeywell’s trained technicians can more easily share knowledge and speed up repair and overhaul work.

“Our global Center of Excellence for the T55 engine allows us to grow our throughput to be two to three times our previous capacity to better support the U.S. Army and CH-47 Chinook helicopter fleets worldwide,” said Dave Marinick, president, engines and power systems for Honeywell Aerospace, in a statement. “Our organization is always focused on improving our support for today’s warfighters, and we are proud to roll out this transition as part of that commitment to the U.S. Army.”

The T55 engine is used in the CH-47 Chinook and MH-47 helicopters. Honeywell has built more than 6,000 T55 engines since their debut in 1955. The company said T55 maintenance is a priority as there are more than 900 CH-47 Chinook helicopters being operated today by international and domestic military organizations.
