Optical coatings are utilized in nearly every facet of daily life. The telecommunications, automotive and even architectural industries all make use of optical coating technology in some form. Smartphones, ubiquitous in everyday life, each contain multiple optical coatings.
Though by no means a simple process, a basic understanding of the optical coating manufacturing process can be accessible to all, and that is the goal of this presentation which is broken into two parts:
- Anatomy of a Coating Chamber: an overview of the facilities and components required to produce an optical coating.
- Optical Coating Practitioner’s toolbox: An introduction to optical coating process development and designing for manufacturability.

About Our Presenter:
Craig Ament received his Bachelor’s degree in Physics from the University of Central Florida and earned his Master’s degree in Optical Sciences from the University of Arizona. He has been managing optical coating production facilities since 2013, including responsibility for process development and coating design. In 2019 he founded Arizona Thin Films, an optical coating manufacturer based in Tucson, Arizona.
