Arizona State University and the University of Arizona spun out more startups and issued more patents in 2020 than they did in 2019 — with the potential to contribute millions of dollars to the state’s economy. The two state universities spun out 38 startups in fiscal 2020, up from 29 in fiscal 2019. They also issued 222 patents in fiscal 2020, up from 185 in fiscal 2019.
Construction remains on track for The Bridges’ first building, The Refinery, a four-story building that will serve as the University of Arizona’s innovation and commercialization hub. UArizona will occupy 50% of the space at The Refinery, with the rest available to businesses looking to co-locate with the university’s expertise.
University of Arizona Center for Innovation (UACI) startup SGNT has received a $749,000 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant through the National Science Foundation (NSF). A startup incubator network with outposts across the Southern Arizona region, The mission of the University of Arizona Center for Innovation (UACI) is to grow scalable science and technology startup ventures that fuel the Arizona economy.
PHX Startup Week will be a month this year, kicking off at the beginning of April with virtual events for three weeks and ending with five days of keynote speakers, workshops and tactical learning sessions. PHX Startup Week is partnering with Startup Together AZ to expand statewide to help support and grow Arizona’s startup ecosystem. Organizations across the state are teaming up to highlight resilient businesses and entrepreneurs that survived the pandemic.
Despite a challenging year caused by the spread of the COVID-19 virus, Arizona’s technology sector was able to rebound quickly and even outpace Q4 2019 in several significant growth metrics. The Arizona Technology Council’s latest quarterly Arizona Technology Industry Impact Report provides insight on the progress of the state’s tech sector. The new data shows a 29% increase in STEM job postings in December 2020 vs. December 2019 and a 4.3% growth in Arizona technology companies year-over-year.
