Alumni update: Alessandra Caballero

UAT Blog

At the University of Advancing Technology, we love to catch up with our alumni and see where their careers are taking them. We were glad to hear from Alessandra Caballero, an international student and familiar face around the commons. Read on to find out what she’s up to and hear her advice for other students.

What did you study at UAT and why did you choose that program?

I was in the game art and animation program. I eventually want to be a game environment or texture artist so I knew this program would help me learn the tools I needed to do that in the future.

What was your most memorable experience in college?

Realizing that teachers and other students really liked my projects and assignments. Winning “best of show” award in the SIP fair for my project was very nice, too.

Where are you working now and what do you do?

I work at Fabcom, and I usually work with 3D modeling and texturing for virtual rooms/experiences.

Do you have a mentor? How do they help you?

I don’t have a mentor, but I did have some teachers at UAT that helped me improve a lot.

Do you feel comfortable being a woman in STEM?

I do for the most part.

What is your biggest obstacle?

I would say I’m my biggest obstacle and immigration status in the U.S. is my second biggest one (lol). Sometimes I’m hard on myself and don’t realize what I’m capable of or don’t challenge myself enough. Being from outside the country (Mexico) has been an obstacle for me as I’m not completely certain that I will have the opportunity to make my life here and work here permanently so that makes it a bit difficult.

What advice would you tell young women considering as they prepare to graduate college?

Be confident that you’ll figure it out, even if it doesn’t seem like it, and remember that we were all nervous when graduating and getting a job (and continue getting nervous about doing “adult” things, and that’s ok! ?) .
