Howard Stewart, President/CEO of AGM Container Controls speaks on this episode about how to protect your employees during uncertain times and how employee benefits have led to company success. AGM manufactures environmental control hardware for missiles, satellites, and the containers that transport missiles, engines, and other sensitive equipment. AGM also manufactures the world’s premier wheelchair lift under the brand name “Ascension,” which provides access to stages and platforms in public and private facilities for individuals with disabilities. The company is located in Tucson and has 115 employees.
AGM employees have been with the company for an average of nine years. Employees who meet the criteria, which is the majority, can participate in the employee stock ownership plan. Over two to three years they can become employee owners in the company. “We feel that the ESOP has been really key to the success of the company,” said Stewart. AGM was recognized in 2009 as one of the best small businesses in the country by the US Chamber of Commerce. “It’s not just because we are an ESOP, it’s because we have leveraged the ESOP to make it effective for our company,” said Stewart. One of the reasons the ESOP is successful is Stewart’s dedication to teaching his employees how to think and act like owners.
Stewart is also a champion of providing college tuition reimbursement to every AGM employee. On average 26% of AGM’s employees attend college in any given year. “It’s another reason why we have been successful as a company. We’re giving our employees the opportunity to make the most of themselves and their lives,” said Stewart.
