Intel scores win in multi-billion patent battle with VLSI

The U.S. Patent Office tribunal on Wednesday delivered a big win for Intel Corp. in its long-running legal tangle with VLSI Technology LLC.
As Reuters reports, the office invalidated a second VLSI-held patent related to a $2.18 billion award VLSI won against Intel in 2021 (Nasdaq: INTC). The patent in the latest ruling accounted for about $1.5 billion of the total. The tribunal last month invalidated the VLSI patent tied to the remaining amount of the award.
VLSI is a patent holding company that has sued Intel on multiple occasions.
In November, it won a $948.8 million award from Intel after a federal jury in Texas found the chipmaker had infringed on multiple VLSI patents. At the time, an Intel spokeswoman told the Silicon Valley Business Journal the company would appeal, referring to VLSI as a “patent troll.”
Intel stock closed at $35.82 Thursday afternoon, up just slightly from Wednesday’s close. Track the stock here.
