Optical Systems Engineer – Arizona Optical Metrology

Company Profile

AOM is bringing decades of experience in optical metrology expertise to bear on some of the most demanding optics applications on earth – the fast-growing commercial space telescope industry, next-generation AR/VR/MR headsets, and a host of other research and industrial technologies that will shape humanity’s future through optics.

We are a fast-growing optics metrology business supporting amazing technology development all around the world. We operate with the pace and feel of a tech startup with the security of a mature technology at its core. It’s challenging, fun, and offers many opportunities to learn and grow for a motivated Optical Systems Engineer.

Our products and services include:

  • Computer Generated Holograms (CGHs) enabling interferometric testing of optical surfaces – aspheres, freeforms, cylinders, conic sections, and many other complex surface shapes and optical systems
  • Mechanics for precise positioning and alignment of CGHs and test optics
  • Development of complete optical test setups for the fast-growing commercial space telescope industry, consumer electronics customers, the semiconductor lithography industry, and many other applications.

Essential Functions

Systems Engineer key roles and responsibilities:
  • Primary responsibility for the development of test systems that include optics, mechanics, data acquisition, and software.
  • Lead technical development of initial design concepts, identify assumptions, and key trades related to performance and cost.
  • Collaborate with the project manager to develop WBS and plan for managing development, design, manufacturing, QC, and commissioning.
  • Work with the technical team to develop cost-effective solutions, performance analysis, and manufacturing plans with an emphasis on manufacturability
  • Performance verification and documentation, define quality plans, and verify that all aspects of QC are complete and documented.
  • Support deployment and commissioning of test systems hardware in the field.
Optical Engineer key roles and responsibilities:
  • Perform design and analysis for optical systems, develop optical models of imaging and metrology systems.
  • Utilize software for efficient perturbation analysis and develop comprehensive error budgets.
  • Develop software as necessary to perform analysis of simulations and data.
  • Use AOM proprietary modeling software to design CGH test setups of optical surfaces and systems.
  • Understand customer requirements and develop concepts of operations with emphasis on using AOM heritage methods.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess these skills and qualifications:

  • MS or Ph.D. in Optical Engineering
  • At least 5 years’ experience in optical systems engineering role
  • Demonstrated ability to balance performance, cost, risk, and schedule for the development of optical systems.
  • Proficient in optical design and analysis, including Zemax or equivalent software.
  • Hands-on experience setting up and aligning optical systems, making precision measurements with Interferometer, CMM, laser trackers.
  • Experience developing optical tests, including error budgets and verification plans.
  • Ability to create software for post-processing data from optical modeling or measurements.
  • Understanding of optical surface specification, GD&T, kinematic constraints, and experience putting these ideas into practice.
  • Experience processing test data, quantifying, and reducing uncertainty.
  • Provide detailed reports and customer-facing documentation for the metrology systems that are produced
  • Due to the nature of some of the projects we take on, US Citizenship or Permanent Resident visa (green card) required
