Optics Valley Technical Series: Metrology as an Enabler to Challenging Optical Components and Systems

Register

Metrology – the measurement of optical components – is a critical step to ensure that what you make will work as expected. While it’s tempting to address metrology after the design phase, it is critical to consider it from the beginning. Metrology drives the overall accuracy an optic can achieve, the speed of manufacturing, and even the types of optics that are possible to make.

This presentation will provide you with strategies to develop a metrology plan that fits your needs, from one-off R&D components to high volume manufacturing, and examples:

• Error budget driven choices: How to put together an error budget
• Production-worthy metrology: Throughput, automated alignment, and consistency
• Novel technology demands novel metrology

Who Should Attend?

  • Executives
  • Engineers
  • Researchers
  • Managers

About Our Presenter:

Dr. Shelby Ament received her bachelors degree in physics from DePauw University in 2010 and her PhD in Optical Science from the University of Arizona in 2016. Her dissertation research involved designing diffractive optics that boost the efficiency of solar energy conversion. She currently works as an optical engineer at Arizona Optical Systems (AOS) to design, fabricate, and align meter-class optics for the astronomy and aerospace communities.

Arizona Optical Systems (AOS) is a leading manufacturer of precision optical systems for the aerospace and astronomical communities. Founded in 2009 and based in Tucson, Arizona, AOS maintains a team of 50+ engineers, technical specialists, and administration having core competencies in the development of custom optical systems.

Optics Valley, a committee of the Arizona Technology Council, is one of the leading clusters for optics, photonics and astronomy in the world. Optics Valley’s mission is to catalyze, convene and connect optics, photonics, astronomy and the supporting business interests throughout Arizona.
