21st century skills include critical thinking, problem solving, and collaboration. Existing public schools, especially those that serve low-income populations, fall short on curriculum for these skills. That’s why in 2014 visionary leader Angelica Cruz founded SySTEM Schools in central Phoenix where there were only “D” and “C” rated schools and none were STEM focused. Armed with a vision for student diversity and committed to expanding school choice, SySTEM now has 120 students in grades 6-9 and an excellent STEM academic environment. Now in its third year, it has already made a big difference in the lives of its “scholars,” who have received environmental awards, met with Gov. Ducey, and taken trips to see colleges.
The philosophy and methodology of SySTEM Phoenix is unique because of its project-based learning approach, eschewing textbooks, flashcards, or drill memorizations for real world projects that integrate reading, writing, math, science, and social science skills. To do this teachers create a long term teaching map of quarterly problem focus for students based on the 8 UN Millennium Goals (e.g., refugee problem, water crisis, global warming, recycling, etc.). Then students work in groups to solve their problem and create a vehicle to communicate their solutions, such as a podcast, PPT, movie, report or proposal that then gets presented to a congressman, a company or other relevant and interested audience. Learning goes beyond the classroom, remaining relevant to global, real world problems.
To give our students a competitive advantage when applying to college, SySTEM offers an option to concurrently earn an AA degree in Science from a community college. This enables students to demonstrate a level of accomplishment that can help them qualify for a better university or scholarships. For students who may not have the network or support at home, SySTEM offers exposure to and connections with professionals through its Partner Program. This program offers aspirational/inspirational experiences with professionals that expose students to a variety of careers that help level the playing field for future success. We have excellent partnerships with companies like, Honeywell Aerospace, Google Education, Banner Health Systems, Prospect.io and Co+Hoots. Why not add yours to the list?
We provide after school programs at no cost to our students, including Mini Med School, Coding, Robotics, Entrepreneurship and even Dance. We also provide annual college trips to campuses like Stanford, Harvard, and MIT. Because we are a not-for-profit public charter school, we are always looking for corporate or individual sponsors for these and other programs. Would you like to sponsor a program to help our students succeed?
