Piedmont Airlines has chosen Tucson-based Universal Avionics to provide GPS-based flight management systems (FMS) for retrofit of the carrier’s Dash 8 series 100 fleet. The pact is in addition to a previous award to provide multi-function displays for the same fleet.
Piedmont has been a long-term operator of Universal Avionics FMS in its Q300 fleet. The new FMS will permit flying the most complex procedures, such as a heading to altitude, precision arc, procedure turn and holding pattern—all maneuvers necessary to accurately fly standard instrument departures, standard terminal arrival routes and approaches.
In turn, pilots will gain the quickest, most efficient means of creating flight plans, and the most pilot-friendly method of altering the flight plan elements as desired or as required by air traffic control. Modifications will be completed this year.
