Arizona Technology Council Hosts Statewide Tech Recycle Day

Free service allows community to recycle unwanted electronics at major drop-off locations throughout Arizona on January 24, 2009

PHOENIX, Ariz. – January 13, 2009 — In an effort to help Arizona citizens kick off a “Green New Year”, the Arizona Technology Council today announced it is hosting a statewide Tech Recycle Day on January 24, 2009 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sponsored by Data Doctors and Westech Recyclers, the Council will be collecting any used or unwanted computers or electronic equipment to recycle and refurbish at three major drop-off locations in the Phoenix area or any Data Doctors location in Arizona. A portion of the donated equipment will be handled through the Tech Terra  Recycling or Reuse Alliance of the Arizona Technology Council and Westech Recyclers that supports educational programs and scholarships.

“It is a worthwhile goal to limit waste and recycle all that is possible,” said Mitch Klein, chairman of the Arizona Technology Council Environmental, Natural Resources and Safety Committee. “Arizona Technology Council is passionate about keeping technology green and is pleased to have this opportunity to assist individuals, companies and organizations recycle unused or unneeded computers and electronic equipment.”

The electronic equipment and components acceptable for drop-off includes personal computers, main frames, servers, point-of-sale, printing, audio/visual and telecom devices. Surplus metals, wire and cable, ballasts, batteries, power strips and miscellaneous electronic items such as test and/or lab equipment are also acceptable.

“This is an excellent opportunity for everyone to properly dispose of their unwanted electronic items instead of throwing them into the trash dump,” said Ken Colburn, president, Data Doctors Computer Services. “It is the environmentally responsible thing to do and our great, great, great grand children will appreciate it.”

“As a firm that specializes in the disposal and recycling of used computers and other electronics, Westech Recyclers encourages everyone to take advantage of this free event.” said Tom Holland, business development manager, Westech Recyclers. “Excess waste in our landfills is a nationwide concern. It has been estimated that landfills are being filled with obsolete computer equipment now in as much quantity as they were being filled with old tires in the 1980's.”

The drop-off locations are: Avnet Corporate Office, 2211 S. 47th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85034 (Hohokam Expressway and University Drive); Avnet Pecos Road Facility, 6700 W. Morelos Place, Chandler, AZ 85226 (I-10 and Loop 202); and OneNeck Corporate Headquarters, 5301 North Pima Road, Suite 100, Scottsdale, AZ, 85250 (Loop 101 and Chaparral); or any Data Doctors location in Arizona. Data Doctors locations can be found at http://www.datadoctors.com/mkt/AZ.

Ken Colburn and co-host Brandon Disney will be discussing the proper way to recycle old technology on the “Computer Corner” radio show broadcast from 12:20 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on 92.3 FM KTAR,  Saturday, January 17 and online at www.datadoctors.com/radio.
